How to Format a Canada Address
If you're sending a letter or package to someone living in Canada, you must make sure your address is properly formatted. Failure to follow guidelines could result in delays or fees during processing and delivery. The wrong spelling or abbreviation can also lead to your mail being lost, which can be a major disappointment for your recipient!
Proper formatting is important because postal sorting machines use the information to read addresses. For example, the first line should include the recipient's name; the second should be the civic address (including building and street names, and if applicable, apartment number); and the third should be the municipality, province, and postal code.
The last line should always be "Canada," even if the mail is being sent to a Canadian territory or foreign country. Note: If the address is a PO box, you should write the recipient's name in the same way, but include a station and the postal box number in place of the street address.
Other tips for writing a Canada address include using uppercase letters, putting the title or floor above the street number, and separating the city and province by a hyphen. It's also recommended to use a boring font that's easy for sorting equipment to read, rather than a regal or ornate one. Also, avoid using commas or periods in the addresses; a hyphen is a better option for dividing words like unit/suite and street.
